Buying watches

I want to buy a specific watch. How do I proceed?
There are many ways to buy a watch on Chrono24:

1. Chrono24 Trusted Checkout
With Trusted Checkout, you order a watch from the dealer of your choice and pay via Chrono24. You don't pay the dealer directly; rather, your money goes into an escrow account, where it remains safely until you have the watch in your hands. The Chrono24 team is always available to help and ensure your purchase runs smoothly. You can identify Trusted Checkout offers by the green Trusted Checkout symbol.

To buy a watch via Trusted Checkout, click on the green Make a purchase request button and enter your delivery address. Afterwards, the dealer will send you an individualized offer including shipping costs. Accept the offer to order the item.

2. Buy It Now
With Buy It Now, you may order the watch without contacting the dealer beforehand. These offers are marked with Buy It Now available.

To buy an item, click on the green Buy It Now button on the offer page. Enter your shipping address and order the item. Afterwards, make your payment, which stays in an escrow account until you receive the watch. Only after you have the item does the money go to the dealer.

3. Contact the dealer directly
If neither Trusted Checkout nor Buy It Now are available, you should contact the dealer via the contact form (by clicking on the Contact this seller now button) or phone.
Who is my contract partner when buying a watch?
Your contract partner is either the respective dealer or a private seller in all cases. Please note that Chrono24 does not participate in the actual sales process; the sale takes place between the buyer and seller. If you buy your watch from a dealer, please note the relevant Terms and Conditions for the dealer. If you're buying a watch via Trusted Checkout or Buy It Now, the Terms of Sale will be displayed to you during the purchasing process.
How do I contact the seller of a watch?
For offers available via Trusted Checkout or Buy It Now, you can order the item by clicking on the green Make a purchase request button or Buy It Now button. You can ask the seller general questions about the offer by clicking on the Questions about this watch? button.

For all other offers, contact the seller by clicking on the Contact this seller now button.

The seller will receive your message as an e-mail. We have no way of knowing when the dealer will read or answer your message. Alternatively, you can call the dealer. The phone number is listed on the offer page under the Seller information box.
What components make up the sale price of a watch?
Various different components are involved in the sales price of a watch. Firstly, the offer price for the watch itself is relevant. Additional costs for packaging, insurance, shipment or VAT and import sales taxes may also apply. Depending on whether you order your watch from a dealer in Germany or abroad, the additional costs can vary in amount. Contact the dealer for specific information.
The offer comes from abroad. What should I consider when buying and what fees apply?
The price is displayed in the ad as entered by the seller. There may thus be additional costs such as customs duties, taxes, shipment and insurance costs.

For the exact price and the costs involved, please contact the seller of the watch. They can also tell you whether the carrier will take care of the customs formalities. For the regulations applicable in your country, please contact your local customs authority.

Watch purchases are duty free within the European Union. When importing from a third country into the EU, such as from the United States, a minor customs duty and the import sales tax are added to the price. Please contact your customs authority for detailed information.
What payment methods are available?
Each dealer decides which payment methods they will offer. Please contact the seller directly to discuss any payment details. Sellers sometimes list possible payment methods in the description text. A payment method commonly offered by commercial watches dealers is advance payment by bank transfer, since - unlike credit cards and PayPal - there are not a lot of additional fees for buyers and sellers. In this case, the watch will be shipped after the payment has been credited to the dealer’s account. Please note that this may take a few days. Alternatively, there is payment processing via PayPal, credit card, a personal meeting in a safe place with payment in cash, or using trusted escrow services.

Many dealers offer their watches via the Chrono24 Trusted Checkout. With Trusted Checkout, the entire order is processed through Chrono24 - from the submission of a request to the seller, payment of the purchase item and, finally, to the organization of the return of the item where necessary. The Chrono24 team is at your constant disposal during this process and ensures that the process runs smoothly.
What does the Trusted Seller seal indicate about a dealer?
Every dealer on Chrono24 is extensively checked for their identity and integrity during registration. The Trusted Seller seal is awarded exclusively to dealers who are distinguished by special reliability and trustworthiness in their dealings with Chrono24 and its users.

Trusted Sellers are commercial watch dealers and undertake to comply with certain conditions. These include, among other things, that

  • the information posted on the platform and provided to Chrono24 about themselves and their company is truthful
  • they sell only original goods from trusted sources
  • they state the conditions of their goods truthfully and point out possibly existing defects or damages in writing and through images
  • they generally answer customer inquiries about Chrono24 that arrive by e-mail within five working days.

Ensuring fair business transactions is a priority. Should there be disagreements, the dealer will look for a mutually satisfactory solution, together with the customer. The violation of one or more of these conditions can lead to the temporary or permanent loss of the Trusted Seller seal or – in the event of serious infringements – of Chrono24 membership.
How does my e-mail address appear to the seller?
In order to protect the privacy of our users, we hide the e-mail addresses of buyers and sellers communicating via our system. When you contact a seller, your private e-mail address is not displayed, but rather automatically anonymized by our system.

The seller can request your contact information once an agreement has been reached. You will receive a link to a form on our site via e-mail, which you can use to send your contact data.

Here is an example of an anonymized e-mail address:
41d07ee4-9cb3-4893-ade2-012bb56efc88-1un98@reply.chrono24.com
Why are the e-mail addresses of some sellers anonymized and some not?
We have introduced an anonymized communication system for sellers located in certain countries. Currently, only the e-mail addresses of users in these countries are anonymized. We will soon be expanding this communication system to all other countries.

How do I place an ad for a watch?
Place an ad for your watch in just a few steps using our form:
  1. Describe your watch in detail. The more detailed your description is, the easier it is for potential buyers to find your ad.
  2. Add up to 4 pictures of the watch to your ad. Keep your camera handy. During the ad process, you'll be asked to take 2 pictures of the watch set to a specific time and upload them as proof of ownership. These pictures are displayed in your ad.
  3. Enter your personal information.
  4. In the final step you can review your information one last time and pay the ad fee.
How much does an ad cost and what are the payment methods available?
We charge a fee of 2.85% of the listing price for private watch ads. There is a minimum charge of 5 USD and a maximum charge of 299 USD per ad, regardless of the listing price. If your watch doesn't sell within 6 months, we will fully reimburse you the fee. You can pay this ad fee via PayPal, credit card, or bank transfer. Last updated 10/2015.
How exactly does the money-back guarantee work?
If you do not sell your watch within 6 months, we will refund your listing fee. The conditions for this are: that your watch was posted online at Chrono24 for 6 months, that it was not sold, and that it is still in your possession. You must also show - within 4 weeks after the 6 months have expired - that you still own the watch.
How do I edit or delete my private listing?
You edit your private listing in the myChrono24 area “My ads”. By clicking on the corresponding link, you can modify or delete your ads. If you want to make changes to the price, manufacturer or model, please contact PrivateSeller@chrono24.com. Please note that your ad will be permanently removed from our inventory once you delete it.
What payment options can I offer buyers?
You can offer payment options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or escrow service. Unfortunately, our Trusted Checkout service is only available for commercial dealers. It is very important that you send the item only after you have received payment and the money is in your account.

If you and the buyer agree to use PayPal, you need the buyer's PayPal e-mail address to issue a payment request. To do this, you must request the buyer's contact information using our form. There's a link to this form in every e-mail you receive from the buyer via our system.

Of course, you can also choose to personally deliver the watch. We recommend that you choose a safe and monitored location for this, such as a jewelry store.
Why am I not shown the prospective buyer's e-mail address?
In order to protect the privacy of our users, we hide the e-mail addresses of buyers and sellers communicating via our system. Instead, the e-mail addresses are automatically anonymized. This helps protect you from people looking to abuse our platform for phishing or other fraudulent purposes.

Once an agreement has been reached, you can use our online form to request the buyer's contact information for shipping purposes or to be able to send a PayPal payment request. A link to form is located in every e-mail you receive from a prospective buyer via our system.

  3. Submit verification documents
Then you can already upload your first offers. Before your offers are published, your dealer account must first be activated by Chrono24. What are the pricing models for commercial dealers?
Chrono24 offers different packages for different needs. The packages differ (among other things) in the number of offers and the images per offer. The pricing models also affect the positioning in the search results list and the TOP offers on the Chrono24 homepage. You can either pay monthly or for a year in advance. Click here to find all the details.
Who is allowed to book the premium package and what advantages does it offer?
We provide the premium package exclusively to dealers who have been registered at Chrono24 for at least one year. The dealer must also be a Trusted Seller. Click here to find the conditions for receiving the Trusted Seller status and the seal.

The premium package offers several advantages. It increases the visibility of your offers on the homepage and in the search result list, and allows you to post more images. All your offers will also be marked with the Premium Seller icon. In the results list, your top offers will be labelled with TOP in the image. In the “These watches might also interest you” area on the offer page, prospective buyers will be shown exclusively your own watch ads. You also benefit from ad-free offers, since no advertising from other dealers will appear beside your offers.
How do I post my offers?
You can either post your watch manually or have the data imported from your website.

You can create your offers manually in the dealer area. Just fill in the new offer form. Our questionnaire quickly guides you through a complete description of your watch. You can publish between 6 and 16 images for each offer, depending on your prepaid package.

You may import data directly from your website, starting from a volume of 25 offers and the PRO listing. The data is automatically imported from your website and updated daily.

Express Sale

What is Express Sale?
Express Sale is a free service for private sellers. Private sellers can sell their watch within 6 days by offering it to a select group of dealers using a sealed bidding process. The dealers have 5 days to submit a request for your watch and do not see other dealers' offers.
How do I sell a watch using Express Sale?
  1. Create a request for your watch using our iPhone app.
  2. After the request has been reviewed and published by Chrono24, participating dealers have 5 days to make bids on your watch.
  3. After this period is over, you have 3 days to choose an offer.
  4. If you decide to accept an offer, we will show you the contact information of the dealer whose offer you chose.
  5. The purchase agreement is handled between the two of you directly.
What happens if I don't accept any of the offers?
You are not required to accept an offer. If you'd still like to sell your watch, you can do this via a private ad on Chrono24.
What does the service cost?
The service is completely free for you as a private seller.
How do I safely send my watch?
Chrono24 does not have an agreement with any particular shipping company at this time. Popular global shipping companies include FedEx, UPS, or GLS. Please contact them directly to inquire about shipping. Make sure to ship your watch insured for its full value.

Tip: Chrono24 dealers are often very familiar with how to ship watches safely. Feel free to ask them for advice.
What happens after I've decided to accept an offer?
After you've decided on an offer, we will give you the contact information of the dealer so you can reach them. The dealer will also receive your contact information. The purchase agreement is handled between you and the dealer directly. If you cannot come to an agreement, you can still relist your watch on Chrono24.
What should I do if I don't receive any offers?
If you didn't receive an offer you like, you can create a private ad on Chrono24 and sell your watch to buyers from around the world.
How do payment and shipment function?
You agree on payment and shipment details directly with the dealer. Most dealers prefer to pay after receiving the watch. The only dealers allowed to participate in Express Sale are those who have successfully sold watches on Chrono24 for several years.
