Description |
Patek Phillipe’s Gondolo collection was born from its inspiration in Art Deco and specifically offers less common case shapes one would regularly see on any Patek timepiece. Originally launched in 1993, the name of this collection was derived from the “Chronometro Gondolo” watches manufactured for the renowned Brazilian retailer – Gondol & Labouriau, in Rio de Janeiro between 1902 and 1930.
For those who remember the exhilarating atmosphere of the New Year's Eve of 2000, a moment marked by the onset of a new century and the advent of the third millennium, Patek Philippe found its own unique way to commemorate the turning of this historic page. The result was the introduction of a remarkable limited edition series—the Ref. 5100 'Gondolo' 10 Days. This exceptional collection comprised a total of 3,000 timepieces, each designed to capture the essence of the occasion. Among this exclusive lineup, 1,500 units were crafted in 18-carat yellow gold with a white dial (Ref. 5100J), 300 units in platinum featuring a black dial (Ref. 5100P), 750 units in 18-carat rose gold adorned with a brown dial (Ref. 5100R), and finally, 450 units in 18-carat white gold showcasing a distinctive blue dial. The example we are showcasing today proudly belongs to the most latter category—the Ref. 5100G. Starting with the Ref. 5100G’s extravagant case design which is presented in a surprisingly wearable package at 46mm x 34mm, it draws inspiration from the graceful anatomical contours of a manta ray and also pays homage to the renowned Ref. 2554. This connection is underscored by the inclusion of a booklet featuring a photographic illustration of a manta ray within the set. Running your fingers along the case, you quickly appreciate the intricacy involved in its construction, particularly in the fluid and unusual styling of the mid-case band (resembling the pectoral fins of a manta ray) which features flared bezel edges catching light beautifully at certain angles, a feat accomplished through an impressive 188 distinct operations. The final touches include a Calatrava-signed crown and a fascinating vaulted convex-concave sapphire crystal, enhancing the dramatic profile of the case when observed from the side. Beneath that elaborate sapphire crystal is a lustrous sunburst blue dial which hosts highly-sober 18-carat white gold Arabic numerals and appliqué hour markers in alternating sequence, a set of faceted Dauphine-style white gold hands, a power reserve indicator at the 12 o ‘clock position with a red tip to signal the depletion of power reserve, as well as a sub-seconds register at the 6 with concentric circles embedded within them. Turn the Ref. 5100G over on its caseback and you’ll be greeted with a stunning in-house, manual-winding Cal. 28-20/200 PS IRM displayed in all of its glory. With 175 individual components altogether, this calibre boasts Patek Philippe's renowned Gyromax balance wheel, a patented marvel originating in 1949, and is embellished with elegant Côtes de Genève finishing. Notably, it proudly bears the COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) certification, as well as the prestigious Poinçon de Genève (Geneva Seal), attesting to its remarkable precision. Worth mentioning also is the calibre's distinctive rectangular shape, meticulously designed to perfectly fit the inner contours of the Ref. 5100G's unconventional case, and showcases the exceptional technical prowess of a manufacture like Patek Philippe. The Patek Philippe Ref. 5100G is undoubtedly a unique and uncommon reference, akin to a rare bird (perhaps a manta ray?) in the watch world. What makes this set even more special is the inclusion of a really interesting box and a silver commemorative coin featuring the iconic sculpture situated at the Patek Philippe manufacture in Geneva, which was inaugurated in 1997. It also comes with a presentation stand, allowing you to showcase it in your display cabinet, credenza, or work desk if you wish (yes, you absolutely should). All I can say is that if you are in search of a rare Patek Philippe that’s a little off the beaten path, this Ref. 5100G certainly deserves a prime spot on your list. CONDITION REPORT This Patek Philippe Ref. 5100G ‘Gondolo’ 10 Days is in excellent condition. It comes as a full set with its presentation box, papers, as well as a commemorative coin with a display stand. The watch is in full working order.
